Key Points

  • Asia Pacific pension funds saw assets surge by 22.5% in 2025, expanding faster than those in North America and Europe to hold 45.5% of top-20 capital and 26.6% of total global assets.
  • Japan’s GPIF remains the world's second-largest fund at $1.9 trillion, whilst Australia’s Retirement Trust entered the top 20.
  • Funds are actively adopting artificial intelligence to boost productivity whilst embedding net-zero roadmaps and decarbonisation targets into their core investment strategies.

Asia Pacific pension funds are steadily expanding their influence and capital base. The region’s funds lifted their share among the world’s top 20 from 42.6% to 45.5% in 2025, with assets surging 22.5% over the year, according to the latest Thinking Ahead Institute/Pensions and Investments Top 300 study. That pace outstripped North America and Europe, underscoring Asia’s rising weight in shaping global investment flows.

Japan’s Government Pension Investment Fund (GPIF) remains the world’s second-largest pension fund, managing $1.9 trillion, just behind Norway's fund. Australia’s Retirement Trust entered the top 20 for the first time, reflecting the growing scale of superannuation in the country.

Overall, Asia Pacific accounted for 26.6% of total global pension fund assets in 2025, up from 25.9% the year before. Over the past five years, the region posted an annualised growth rate of 4.3%, second only to North America’s 6.4%.

Asset allocation trends reveal distinctive regional preferences. While equities remain the dominant holding globally, Asia Pacific funds show a stronger tilt towards fixed income, with 36.4% of assets in bonds compared to 51.4% in equities.

Technology adoption is also reshaping the sector. Several of the region’s largest players reported rolling out new digital tools and AI systems in 2025, signalling a shift from technology as a back-office function to a driver of investment processes and organisational effectiveness. The emphasis is on integration — using data, automation and intelligence platforms to enhance decision-making and scale capabilities

“All employees now actively use AI tools in their daily work… employees report an average productivity increase of 20% when using AI tools,” Government Pension Fund, Norway said in the report.

At the same time, sustainability has become a defining feature of pension strategies. Funds are embedding decarbonisation and net-zero targets into portfolio construction and risk management, with a growing focus on long-term resilience.

“Climate change remains a major challenge that brings risks and opportunities for investment. In 2024-2025, we made substantial progress on our Net Zero 2050 Roadmap actions,” the Australian Retirement Trust said in the report.

The report said that the Australian pension fund is developing a view on the use of carbon offsets by investments and is considering the role of natural gas in energy transition.

Such commitments reflect a broader regional trend of aligning capital flows with the energy transition. In this context, Asia Pacific pension funds are positioning themselves not just as capital allocators but as influential actors capable of shaping market behaviour.
